There is so much to write about Gondwana Private Game Reserve, but I think the best thing to do is to spilt the actual Game Reserve from the Accomodation itself. So this review is purely going to be able the accomodation.
Gondwana Private Game Reserve has multiple types of accomodations on site, including the 2 pax Kwena Suites as well as villa options. We also learnt during our stay that you can actually purchase private properties on the game reserve itself for your own stay, if you so wish to. The game reserve itself is situated on the Western Cape in Mossel Bay, with rolling fynbos stretching out in every direction and the reserve feels deliberately removed without being inaccessible. Surrounded by farms, Gondwana Private Game Reserve is not exactly what you would imagine as the wild Africa when you first arrive. But the moment you enter the reserve, it is like a sanctuary. It is about a four hour drive from Cape Town or a short transfer from George Airport and positions itself as a self-contained safari experience, one where the accomodation, dining and game drives are full board and tightly integrated rather than treated as separate components.

The Kwena Suites is a practical choice for couples within the reserve and that becomes obvious quickly. Unlike the villas, which require transfers to reach the main lodge, the suites are within walking distance of the central facilities and the game drive meeting point. When your morning drive briefing is at 0545 hrs, that proximity matters, and every extra minute of sleep feels earned here. We also learnt during our stay that sometimes due to elephants visiting the area, the rangers may hold those staying in the villas within the main lodge until it is safe to transfer them back to the villas. So that is certainly something that needs to be considered.
During our 4 days, we stayed at the Kwena Suites and paid about 1200 SGD for 2 pax full board per night. The design of the suites leans into modern safari aesthetics without overcomplicating things. Interiors are clean and functional, with a clear emphasis on comfort. Everything in the room feels premium but not excessive. The stand out is the bathroom and specifically the shower. After 2 weeks of travel, the Hansgrohe rainshower here was easily the best we encountered. Strong pressure, consistent temperature and enough space to reset properly after a sometimes dusty or rainy game drive. Amenities are from Africology, aligning with the reserve's broader positioning around local sourcing and natural products.
One of the defining features of the Kwena Suites is the watering hole directly in front of the accomodation. This is where the location truly pays off. Throughout our stay, animals passed through regularly. Waterbucks, zebras, impalas and even elephants grazing at a distance. It is not curated or guaranteed, but when it happens, it adds a different layer to the stay that goes beyond scheduled game drives. You are not just observing wildlife on a timetable, it felt like we were genuinely sharing space with it.

There is also an in-room massage option, which is worth booking early if you plan to use it. Slots fill up quickly and it is certainly a great way to recover after early mornings and long drives. Gondwana also offers add-ons like fynbos bush walks and e-bike tours. We had booked into the bush walk but weather conditions meant it was cancelled. Instead, we spent some time walking around the estate, which still gave us a sense of the vegetation and terrain, though without the depth a guided experience would have provided.
The package here is full board and it is structured in a way that ensures you are never really thinking about your next meal. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and tea in between are all included and the pacing aligns with the rhythm of the drives. You start off the day with a light meal before your morning drive and then return to a proper breakfast, do an activity, swim or rest before heading into lunch. Transition into a pre evening drive afternoon tea, spot some more animals before returning back for dinner. There is consistency to it that works well.
We were at Gondwana Private Game Reserve for 4 days and had plenty of time having quite a number on the menu. Let's just say that the menu is extremely extensive and after 4 days, we still had probably 50 % of the menu that we never got it. I am going to list the menu in entirety for those who are interested in what was on offer when we visited. If you are not interested, I'd highly recommend to keep scrolling.

One operational note though, coffee is only included at breakfast. If you order coffee at lunch or dinner or opt for alcoholic drinks at any point, those are charged separately to your room. Food quality is strong, but what stands out more is how much the experience improves when you rely on the staff's recommendations. The team is extremely approachable and refreshingly honest. Across multiple meals, three dishes consistently delivered: the pancetta wrapped prawns, cape calamari for lunch and the rump steak for dinner. Each was clean in flavour and well executed. There is also a running joke among the staff about the plant based eggs on the menu. Every server we spoke to openly advised against ordering them, often with a hearty laugh. It is a small detail, but it reflects a level of honesty that I appreciated. Although curious, we never tried the plant based eggs.
Service across the board is one of Gondwana's stronger points. Staff are attentive without being overbearing and interactions feel genuine rather than scripted. Whether it is meal recommendations or logistical help, there is a sense that the team is there and happy to help. That said, there are some trade offs that come with the setting of being in the middle of no where. Power stability was an issue during our stay. There were a few instances where outages occurred and the backup generators took time to kick in. On one occasion, this triggered an alarm that didnt stop going off. It is not unexpected in this environment. Though also good to have your expectations calibrated before your stay.
Would We Recommend Gondwana Private Game Reserve and Kwena Suites?
Yes! If this is your first safari experience, this stay is going to be exceptional. You will get to see the big five and be taken care of extremely well by the team at this game reserve. The suites are thoughtfully positioned, the food is reliable and you get the a phenomenal experience. If you want a full safari experience with multiple prides of lions or herds of elephants, this would not be the place. Gondwana Private Game reserve at the end of the day is a private game reserve of a 11000 hectare size, which in comparison to somewhere like Maasai Mara National Game Reserve, is about 15 times smaller. It is not a fair comparison by any means, but just one to highlight that you get a compact and great experience, but not one like a National Geographic type setting. At the end of the day, Gondwana Private Game Reserve has a great alignment between accomodation, dining and experience, knows what it is trying to deliver and follows through.
