Weekenders Coffee in Kyoto is renowned globally as one of the top specialty coffee roasters, consistently appearing on the lists of the best roasters worldwide. So since we were in the area, we needed to visit. The roastery is housed in a beautifully restored traditional machiya and has an absolutely gorgeous old Japanese shopfront, lending the space a quiet and beautiful peace and elegance.

What we had:
Costa Rica Carlos Montero Don Eli
Colombia Alejandro Renjifo Geisha
The Costa Rica Carlos Montero Don Eli is a light roast sourced from San Marcos Los Santos, grown at high altitudes of 1600-1700. As a Catuai varietal honey processed, it has a honey light sweetness and complexity, combining citrus and orange notes with creamy caramel and brown sugar sweetness. On the other hand, the Colombia Alejandro Renjifo Geisha, also a light roast is fully washed grown at 1850 m in San Agustin, Huila. The coffee is floral and complex with flavours of lemongrass, hazelnut, bergamot, lychee and honey.
The coffee here is characterized by a philosophy of purity and clarity, with roasts that emphasize extreme lightness to highlight the natural sweetness and acidity.

The physical location of the shop is quite minimal with little room to sit and many visitors end up spending time in the adjacent car park. When we visited, there were about another 15-20 visitors and we noted that most of them were tourists and we didn't see any locals. Quite an interesting observation.

Booking
Walk in only. Expect to wait if getting hand drips.
Accessibility
Weekenders coffee is easily accessible near Tominokoji street, hidden behind an ordinary parking lot. This makes it more of a destination for deliberate seekers rather than casual drop ins.
The Damage
We will not share our damage as we did ask for premium beans. However, a regular cup of pourover would cost 540 JPY, which is very affordable.
Would We Recommend?
Unfortunately, it is not for us. It sits really high on the Top 100 Roasters at No. 31. However, we didn't think it to be worth a trip with this kind of hype. There are definitely better roasters on the list.
