The Last Word Constantia
34 Spaanschemat River Road
Constantia
Cape Town 7806
South Africa
The Last Word Constantia sits in one of Cape Town's oldest and most established suburbs, Constantia, an area known for its historic wine estates and leafy residential feel. Unlike the bustle of the V&A Waterfront or Camps Bay, this part of the city leans slower and more refined, with vineyards and mountain backdrops setting the tone. Views here are less about dramatic ocean panoramas and more about greenery - gardens, mature trees and a sense of calm that defines this part of Cape Town.
The Last Word feels aligned with this setting. It carries an understated, old world charm rather than trying to compete with Cape Town's more modern luxury properties. It is under the i prefer group and offers a personal, boutique style experience. With only 9 guest rooms, you know that you will have all the privacy you need during your stay here. The hotel is tucked away on a quiet street, making it feel private while still being within a short drive to Constantia's many wineries, and just about 30 mins away from the city centre.

One of the defining features of the property is its main living space, which immediately sets the tone. The communal lounge is spacious and thoughtfully arranged, with plush seating that encourages guests to linger. It feels more like a private residence than a hotel lobby. An honesty bar sits within this space, stocked with a selection of drinks, where some are free of charge. The concierge team brought us around the property and definitely did tell us what was free and what was not, but with all the information provided, we just very conveniently forgot because this kind group of folks were always ready to help us whenever we needed it.
Stepping just outside the honestly bar lounge, the property opens into a well maintained garden centered around a pool area. The pool itself is a highlight - large enough for a proper swim but equally suited for lounging. Surrounding it are shaded areas and seating that make it easy to spend an entire afternoon. A small swing hangs from one of the trees which easily became our favourite morning hang out spot.
Rooms at the The Last Word are notably generous in size. Each unit includes a large living area as well as a separate sleeping space, making them feel closer to suites than standard hotel rooms. We stayed in the Elegant Suite in this instance which is a huge 1000 sqft large. The layout works well for longer stays or for travellers who value having space to relax indoors. The bathrooms are equally spacious and each room extends outdoors into a private area, where the staff set up outdoor lounge seating daily. In case you have wondered by now why all the photos dont have seating on them, we took these images early in the morning before the outdoor areas were set up by the team. These areas definitely became must cosier with the outdoor cushions set up.
The minibar is fully complimentary, which is increasingly rare at this level. Guests are free to help themselves without having to keep track of charges, adding to the sense of ease, including full size bottles of wine. We loved turndown service at the hotel. Every night, the housekeeping team would place complimentary desserts like creme brulee for us, which was such a thoughtful touch. Service throughout our 2 night stay was incredibly attentive and consistent. The staff is always on hand and present without being intrusive and interactions feel genuine rather than scripted. The overall approach leans towards hospitality and reception like a visit to a friend's home that is quietly efficient rather than overly formal.
Breakfast is served in a beautiful resort style setting with a gorgeous set up of cold cuts, yoghurts, pastries and fruits, alongside some made to order options including a full english, eggs benedict, omelette, shakshuka, french toast, avocado bagel, salmon bagel, scotch egg and vetkoek. Quality is good across the board and it truly felt like we were on vacation.
Would We Recommend?
Absolutely yes! The Last Word Constantia works best for travellers who value space, a calm surrounding and a more personal style of service over high energy luxury or central location convenience. It is homely, welcoming and comfortable. The combination of large suite style rooms, complimentary everything makes it a very strong option in Constantia. An easy recommendation for us at 400 SGD a night and a hotel we would easily return to.
