We had been struck out twice before, with doors shut tight during its opening period, but on our third try, Apartment Roastery at Jalan Riang finally welcomed us in. Located in the quiet estate of Jalan Riang, along the likes of Clovelly and La Pazziola, this weekend only outpost from Apartment Coffee comes with pedigree. Currently sitting as the World's No. 6 coffee shop and Asia's top roaster per the 2025 World's 100 Best Coffee Shops List.
The space channels a minimalist ethos: natural light floods white walls and angular plywood tables, creating a calm that has been consistent across Apartment joints. No pastries, no takeaways, just filter coffees, espresso and white coffee makes you focus on the brew. We used to frequent Apartment Coffee back in the original Lavender Street Spot but one off incident during covid where my partner was turned away as we didn't have a reuseable mug, left a sour enough taste for my partner for us never to return until a good 4 years later. Does it redeem itself and will we revisit again?
We had 2 drips:
Kenya Kirura Filter with purple grape, black plum and hibiscus notes
Honduras Agua Virgen with red apple, red tea and honey
What do we know about these farms. The Kenyan Kirura is from Kirura Favtory in Kenya's Kiambu County where coffee is produced on volcanic soils at 1800-1950 m with SL28/SL34 lots known for bright acidity and top Kenyan competition grades. The Honduras Agua Virgen on the other hand is produced by a family run farm that has been expanding amid Honduras' high altitude microclimates.
What we thought about the brews? They were definitely very different from each other. The clean and fruit forward profile of the Honduras was a pleasure to drink and the Kenyan had nice acidity. At the price of 8.50 per drip, it is considered really affordable. Was it anything very special, no. But it is a delightful cuppa if you are in the area.
Booking
Walk-ins only. We visited around 11 am on a Saturday morning and had a seat immediately. One of the things that was really odd for us is the fact that they dont do take outs. Which means if you travelled specially for a coffee and there are not seats available, you would have to make the choice of leaving without a coffee or join the line... that is a decision you would have to make.. and is a slightly annoying one, to be honest.
Accessibility
Located in the quiet estates of Braddell Heights, Jalan Riang is not exactly very accessible. The closest MRT is Lorong Chuan and it is around a 10-15 minute walk from the train station, unsheltered. Best to pair this with a visit to an eatery like Clovelly just a couple of shops down that serves stellar pasta.
The Damage
At 8.50 per drip, it is considered affordable for specialty coffee.
Would We Recommend?
Maybe. For curious coffee fans chasing Apartment's world class rep on a budget - yes. Especially at this price for precise profiles from Stellar producers. But if you are chasing transcendent brews and know exactly the type of flavour you would like, I don't think this is somewhere you will need to be rushing to visit.
