A Return to RAPPU After 5 Years - Does Singapore's Original Handroll Bar Still Stand Out?

RAPPU

52 Duxton Road

Singapore 089516

RAPPU has always felt like the poster child for Singapore's casual, hip handroll scene and revisiting it five years on underlined exactly who it shines for - and why I am not its core audience.

Sushi Counter at RAPPU
Sushi Counter at RAPPU

RAPPU sits on Duxton Road, a stretch already heavy with plenty of destination worthy dining and bars and it leans hard into that identity as Singapore's OG handroll bar by the Feather Blade group. The space is build around a long central counter, with low lighting, neon accents. You sit shoulder to shoulder with strangers along this U-Shaped bar, which creates a buzzy, slightly chaotic energy that works well if you've come to drink, date or decompress after work.

We first visited shortly after it had just opened, when the idea of a handroll omakase in Singapore with a modern vibe was novel and a < 50 SGD set of 6 rolls was an easy "why not". Returning now, almost 5 years later and as part of the AMEX Table for 2 program, felt like a de javu moment with the same high energy room with the same fast pace.

Our AMEX Table for 2 Set included:

  • Welcome Drink (RAPPU Highball or Non Alcoholic)

  • RAPPU 6 Handrolls (Tengo or Jiro or Vegan)

    • Hotate

    • Akami

    • Salmon

    • Toro

    • Crab

    • Engawa

  • Lotus Chips

  • Negitoro Ball

  • High Roller With Uni (Wagyu or Toro)

  • Matcha Misu

Under the AMEX Table for 2 programme, it essentially meant the two of us dined for free on the set menu that showcased RAPPU's hits. The structure was clear and easy to navigate and a smart way to introduce newcomers to the concept.

Tengo vs Jigo

RAPPU's menu makes it easy to decide which side of the spectrum you want. Tengo is pitched as more traditional, clean and classic while Jiro is the maximalist sibling that leans into spices, sauces and punchy toppings. Five years ago, I went Jiro and found it too intense and for some reason, I remember it to this day. So this time round I went with the safer Tengo option while my dining partner went with the Jiro option. The Tengos handrolls are served as a closed roll whilst the Jiro rolls are served in an open roll, which makes it very easy to differentiate.

Flavourwise, the Jiro was definitely bold, with layering of different flavours like mentaiko kewpie, chilli oil, sansho, spicy leek combinations. If you like your flavour intensities dialed up, this would be your choice. With Tengo, it was noticeably easier going. Yet, stepping back, I realised how much the baseline in Singapore has shifted. Five years ago, a freshly made handroll at the counter felt exciting. Today, with access to excellent fish and rice at home via places like Suguru, Medi-Ya amongst other premium suppliers, the average diner's expectation for handrolls has risen sharply and a well seasoned roll is no longer a novelty as they are the starting point. So while Tengo was pleasant and fairly priced at ~ 44 SGD for 6 rolls, it does not feel like a standout in 2026.

The High Roller course is where RAPPU goes full spectacle. You choose between Wagyu or Toro. As it lands, the lights dim, torches come out and the staff showers the handroll with little puffs of gold dust. It's theatrical and clearly engineered for instagram and dates - the kind of thing that gets posted as a story before you take your first bite. Certainly an easy ice breaker and a conversation starter, if you are there on your first or second date.

Service at the counter is efficient and upbeat. Staff move around quickly, drinks are constantly flowing. The room is bustling, the turnover is brisk, we are told about dining time restriction upon entry and there is definitely a clear unspoken expectation that you are here for a good time, not a long meditative omakase.

Booking

Reservations are definitely recommended. And a seat by the counter is also definitely recommended. There is availability a week out on a weekend and do note the 1hr15min dining time limit on the weekends.

Accessibility

Located within Duxton, it is a 5 min walk to both Maxwell MRT and Tanjong Pagar MRT and extremely convenient.

The Damage

Under the AMEX Table for 2 programme, it essentially meant the two of us dined for free on the set menu that showcased RAPPU's hits. The structure was clear and easy to navigate and a smart way to introduce newcomers to the concept. For the same menu if paid, it would cost 162 SGD ++

Who is RAPPU for?

  • Diners who like high energy rooms, great vibes, drinks with their sushi

  • Dates where you want a bit of theatre (hello, High Roller!) and fast, fun food

  • Groups of friends kicking off a night out in the Duxton/Tanjong Pagar Area

It makes less sense if:

  • You prioritise quiet, detail driven sushi where the chef's touch and produce are the stars

  • You already have easy access to high quality fish and nori at home and judge handrolls through a stricter lens

Would We Recommend?

For me, this revisit confirmed that RAPPU is a modern, hip handroll bar that has stayed very on brand. At around 44 SGD for 6 made to order rolls in a prime location, the value remains reasonable, and the concept follows through clearly: fast, fun handrolls with a bar vibe. Would I return on my own dime? Probably not. The flavour profile, especially ont he Jiro side, is still extremely loud and my preference always gravitates towards produce forward, quieter sushi counters. But for the right crowd - date night couples, diners who want their sushi with plenty of vibe, RAPPU still delivers on what it set out to be.
