Langham Melbourne
1 Southgate Ave,
Southbank VIC 3006,
Australia
Location
Langham Melbourne is located on the Southbank Promenade of the Yarra River, one bridge away from the Melbourne CBD. It is just around the corner from Crown on the left and the Hamer Hall on the right. It's a nice location, easily accessible to both the CBD as well as the National Gallery of Victoria and the Shrine of Remembrance. If you like the arts precinct of Melbourne and want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Langham is a good option.

Our Stay
As per our usual travel method, we booked Langham via AMEX FHR and this hotel for some reason, always gives us exceptional value. We booked the room at 300 AUD per night with the following perks:
100 USD property credit
Room upgrade when available
12 pm check in
4 pm late check out (Guaranteed)
Daily Breakfast for 2
We booked the Superior Room under AMEX FHR and were offered a Deluxe River Room. The room layout and size is the same between these two rooms, sitting at 32 m2. However the upgraded room has a beautiful view of the Yarra River and Flinders Street Station. The average price of the Superior Room is 300 AUD and the upgraded Deluxe River Room is 360 AUD. So we value this upgrade at 60 AUD.

The room is very charming, elegant and old world, just like the Langham brand. For those who have read enough posts, you'd know that I love a hotel that is old world but has new age technology. Unfortunately, Langham is not that hotel. Parts of the room are starting to show its age, like the curtains that are fraying or the toilet furnishings starting to look dated. However, the overall hotel remains very charming with everything in working order and it would be absolutely fantastic if there was a refresh attempt to keep the Langham Melbourne up to the expectations of a modern traveller.
Facilities
The lobby of the Langham is very classic, marble floors, sweeping staircases and glittering chandeliers and it showcases what to expect in their guest rooms. Langham is also directly connected to Southgate, pictured below. Which is very convenient to grab a quick lunch bite or a coffee.
I had utilised our 100 USD (150 AUD) credit on a massage at the Chuan Spa. No pictures for that, but the Chuan Spa was really relaxing and the massage was good. The 1 hr Balancing massage was 180 AUD, which meant I paid only 30 AUD for my 1 hr massage. Connected to Chuan spa is also the steam room and sauna, which was a very nice relaxing treat before and after the treatment. These 100 USD credits are always such a treat. We may not necessarily need a massage or dinner, but it is a nice way to experience the hotel and what it offers. Certainly after a day of exploring around Melbourne, 1 hr massage was what I needed.

Breakfast
Breakfast is at Melba Restaurant and every day the team gave me a beautiful table overlooking the Yarra River and I particularly looked forward to having a glass of freshly squeezed juice. Langham's buffet spread is well known to be of high quality and indeed, our experience was so. We value this at the local rate of a breakfast, which would be 40 AUD x 2 pax
As per our routine, we utilised our early check in and late check out and we were able to do the same for this stay, getting our room at 10 am and checking out at 4pm. The ability to do so allows us to properly utilise the facilities and amenities and not worry about rushing to check out right after breakfast. It is difficult to put a value on this, but we typically use a 10 % hotel rate for this, which makes the value at 30 AUD.
Langham sits within the FHR program at Amex. Whilst there are aspects of this hotel that makes it very lux, unfortunately, I am not sure it sits within the FHR realm. It is of superb value, often providing a free nights stay with longer stays as well as the regular FHR benefits. However the hotel is dated and the rooms are old and my room in particular, didn't have a working curtain. It is a hotel I want to love, but unfortunately can't. In the precinct, there is Crown Towers right next door or Ritz Carlton in the CBD which I think runs at the next level of what the FHR standard should rightfully be.
In total, AMEX FHR gave us a total of benefits worth approximately 320 AUD. If you think about the fact that the hotel cost 300 AUD, essentially we stayed for free. For that, it remains exceptional value.
Would We Recommend?
Yes! Langham may be starting to show it's age and is not the most luxurious hotel you can stay at in Melbourne, but it offers exceptional value, especially when booked with Amex FHR or Mastercard Travels or Hotelux programs. For those who value a comfortable stay at a good value and being close to the city, Langham Melbourne would be the place for you.
