Da Shi Jia Big Prawn Mee Bib Gourmand in Singapore

Da Shi Jia Big Prawn Mee

89 Killiney Road

Singapore 239534

Da Shi Jia Big Prawn Mee has been sitting at Killiney Road since 2018 and it is considered one of the newer hei mee (or prawn noodle) stalls in Singapore. When you ask Singaporeans about the worthy contenders of best prawn noodles in Singapore, you'd typically get Beach Road Prawn Noodles, River South Hoe Nam, Jalan Sultan Prawn Noodles, Zion Road Big Prawn Noodle, Da Dong Prawn Noodles and Whitley Road Big Prawn Noodles. These are the prawn noodle institutions that have been around for decades. But Da Shi Jia, the new kid on the blog managed to find and secure its spot on the Michelin Bib Gourmand, despite being relatively new in the prawn noodles scene in Singapore.

Who are the people behind Da Shi Jia? Chef Seth Sim comes from a family who is well versed in wok hei. His family runs a couple of Zi Char stalls and Chef Sim himself spent many years honing his skills before starting up Da Shi Jia.

The signature dishes are the Wok Fried big prawn white bee hoon as well as their traditional prawn noodles with 4 prawn sizes: regular, big prawns, big big prawns and big big big prawns. We got the big prawns this time and there are plenty of options that you can add on, including fish cake, pork ribs, sliced meat, meat patty amongst others. I am a traditionalist, just prawns and nothing else.

Da Shi Jia's instructions:

  1. Have a taste of their prawn soup

  2. Add a scoop of homemade sambal chilli

  3. Top with special chilli powder and enjoy

Every Singaporean you speak to probably has their own version on how they enjoy prawn noodles. Some will only have it dry, some will only have the soup version. Some will have it without chilli, some will add plenty of chilli powder and chilli padi. That's the beautiful thing about prawn noodle soup. The soup is prawn forward, umami and allows you to choose your way to have it. We also highly recommend the green apple juice with sour plum here. It is extremely refreshing with a hit of sour plum that goes so well together.

Booking

There are no reservation systems. Turn up and find yourself a seat. Everytime we have visited, it has not been difficult to get tables. Perhaps the location at Killiney is not terribly accessible and you do need to make a purposeful journey here and the parking situation is terrible. Which helps with getting a table quickly.

Accessibility

Like I alluded to, it is a purposeful journey here. Located off Orchard road, the closest MRT station is Somerset MRT. Da Shi Jia is about a 6 min walk from Somerset MRT, unsheltered. I would highly recommend not driving to Da Shi Jia. There is limited street side parking and absolutely horrendous for drivers.

The Damage

At ~ 25 SGD for 1 pax for a prawn noodle and drink, I would consider this a splurge.

Would We Recommend?

Yes. It is expensive, but the prawn broth is thick, with plenty of umami forward flavours and a good option if you feel like a splurge. Whilst Da Shi Jia may not be on many Singaporean foodies radar, it has definitely made its way overseas. When we visited this time, there were many Korean and Chinese tourists and I must say, it is a good bowl of prawn noodle soup for the crowd.
