Honey In The Rock
40, Jalan SS 20/10,
Damansara Kim,
47400 Petaling Jaya,
Selangor
Hidden among an unassuming row of shop lots in Kuala Lumpur's bustling foodie enclave, Honey in the Rock could easily be mistaken for another casual cafe. Paper menus on clipboards sit beside mismatched chairs, a shelf stacked with cookbooks and playful posters lend the space the charm of a home kitchen rather than a polished restaurant. But as soon as the food hits the table, the quiet modesty starts to feel deliberate. It is the camouflage of a place that knows its worth. Beneath the unpretentious surface, Honey in the Rock delivers cooking that borders on fine dining while holding on firmly to accessibility and comfort.

The mind behind the menu is an ex-Dewakan chef, whose training at Dewakan shows in subtle but decisive ways. Opened with her mother, Honey in the Rock carries traces of Dewakan's ethos, with jars of pickles and preserves lining the shelves, fermenting quietly in the unassuming ikea shelves.
The food at Honey in the Rock translates precision of flavours into comforting dishes that speak directly to the Malaysian palate. The kitchen focuses on ingredient integrity reads almost like a manifesto on the menu: chickens are never frozne, vegetables come pesticide free from their farm in Kuala Kubu Bahru and meats are brined meticulously for tenderness. Even the brisket, sourced from purebred corn fed Angus, is smoked in house. It is clear that Chef Sarah is clear what she wants to achieve from Honey in the rock.
We begin the meal with some seasonal ulam salad. Ulam, the malay tradition of raw herbs and greens served with sambal or dressing is often overlooked. But here it becomes a highlight, and certainly one of the highlights of our meal. The ingredients change with the gardens' harvest and each bite is crisp, herbaceous and seasoned to perfection. That perfect acidity balanced with sweetness kept making us go for more.
We then had the Smoked Angus Brisket Ramen as well as the Oxtail Laksa. The smoked angus brisket ramen is a dish that is deceptive in its simplicity, the brisket is indulgently tender, especially with our add on sous vide egg. The dry ramen is like a good bowl of chilli pan mee, indulgent and satisfying. The oxtail laksa is rich but not excessive with exceptionally tender oxtail meat.

The star of the meal was really the Crispy Fried Chicken Platter. The chicken arrives perfectly golden, its crust fluffy like a fish and chips batter. The meat, thanks to careful bringing and a deliberate choice of only fresh local poultry is juicy, tender and flavourful. The kicker her is the asam gelugor, a sour fruit used in Malaysian cooking, which cuts through the richness of the fried chicken. Simply outstanding.
Skip the gelato, though. Our white chocolate macadamia nad black forest scoops looked promising but leaned rather flat in flavour and texture as compared to the finesse of the impactful and powerful meal we had. It is a rare miss in an otherwise extraordinary lineup.
Booking
No reservation system seems to be available. The venue is casual. When we arrived for lunch on a random Saturday, the restaurant was about 30-40 % full, though some reviews have mentioned it gets very crowded during lunch times on certain days.
Accessibility
The restaurant sits within one of KL's established foodie zones which is easily reachable by Grab.
The Damage
Our total bill came to RM 140, an exceptional value for money. For four thoughtfully composed dishes and 2 drinks (also splendid), you would have expected to pay double the amount in any high end bistro. Yet, Honey in the Rock delivers fine dining quality without fine fining formality and more crucially, without fine dining prices. It is a rare sort of place that makes you rethink what value really means in food, not just affordability but mastery served humbly.
Would we recommend?
Without hesitation, yes! Honey int he Rock stands as an exciting example of refined Malaysian cooking presented accessibly. It offers the trained elegance of Chef Sarah's experience in fine dining establishments, but at high quality, affordable prices. In a city crowded with cafes chasing trends, this one stands apart by doing the simplest thing - cooking exceptionally well.
