Musee Marmottan Monet

2 Rue Louis Boilly

75016 Paris,

France

Musee Marmottan Monet is a gorgeous museum dedicated to Claude Monet. It is overlooked by the larger museums like Musee Orangerie and Musee d'Orsay, but in actual fact, it houses the largest collection of Claude Monet's paintings. The collections are donated by Victorine Donop de Monchy in 1957 and also Michel Monet, Claude Monet's youngest son in 1966.

There are over 300 paintings, pastels and drawings that span Monet's entire career and includes the iconic "Impression, Sunrise" which essentially gave the Impressionist movement its name is also located in this museum. The Impressionist movement was led by Monet and his fellow impressionists who sought to capture fleeting movements, play on light and everyday life, essentially breaking the rules of the French Academy and the artistic norms of the time.

A Preview of the Gallery

There is also a breathtaking selection of Monet's large format Water Lilies. The museum takes crowd control very seriously and that meant we had a very private and intimate access to the pieces and spent the most time in the basement of the museum, which is where all the Monet pieces were located. Till this date, Monet's painting still tugs at my heart strings. His deep use of light and colour and connection is simply captivating.

The museum does not end there, beyond this permanent collection, there are other exhibitions on the various floors of the museum, including Berthe Morisot as well as early European art and sculptures and decorative arts from the early 19th century which is worth visiting as well.

Would We Recommend?

Definitely! Musee Marmottan Monet is not one of those large museums. However, it has a spectacular collection and remains a very intimate place to explore the pieces of Monet. If you love impressionism and you love Monet's art, this is a great museum to be in. I thought it was a great supplement to Giverny to see some of how his works evolved and his inspiration translated.
