August Drip

2, Jalan Kancil

Taman Century, 80250 Johor Bahru,

Johor Darul Ta'zim, Malaysia

Located just a few minutes away from KSL mall, this is the cafe we recommend everyone to go to when they are heading across the border to Johor Bahru. For us, it stands out as a specialty coffee roaster that knows what it wants to achieve and thoughtfully curates their selection of coffee roasts in a very warm, community-driven type of atmosphere.

This place has an extremely impressive rating of 4.9 with close to 300 ratings on Google. But the surprising thing is that there are not too many reviews online. This place belongs as a little gem for us and one we hope get plenty of recognition with time.

Our brews for today are the Ethiopian Bench Maji natural and Yunnan super natural. We have been gravitating towards natural and Anaerobic roasts that are more modern tasting, fruit forward and funky and happy to have tried 2 very distinct yet delicious cups.

Natural processing means that the entire coffee cherry is dried intact instead of being depulped. The cherries undergo a slower maturation process and end up way more complex, fuller, smoother and sweeter as compared to a washed process. The Ethiopian was very tropical fruit forward with a very delicate floral note as it cooled and the Yunnan had forward winey notes with a very refreshing citrus punch. Both distinct, both a wonderful display on offer.

Our experience at August Drip is always fantastic. The team there is patient and extremely friendly when selecting a brew and also beans to bring home. When our conversations morphed into our interest in certain types of beans, they shared plenty about the trends now and also very happily shared their brew using their own competition beans as well as an Ethiopian washed that had super strong rice dumpling notes. The team seemed just so happy and excited to share about their own experiences and connect with their guests. I've mentioned so many times on this blog. A place becomes absolutely fantastic and a gem only when guided by a team who is truly passionate and willing to engage. This is exactly what you find in the team at August Drip.

Our beans to bring home:

Espresso:

House Blend 2: Peach Oolong, Vanilla Ice Cream

House Blend 3: Aroma of Whiskey, Champagne Grapes

Drip:

Yunnan Red Wine Fermenta: Pear, Raisin, Cranberry, Maple, Strawberry, Wine

Yunnan Anaerobic Natural: Boramei, Berries, Yellow Plum Wine

Costa Rica Tarrazu Canet Raisin Honey: Strawberry, Mango, Citrus, Whiskey

Accessibility

The current shop is located about a 3 min walk from KSL mall which is ultra convenient. When we visited, the owner tells us that they will be moving to a new space down the road. A modern new multi story building with different zones for different experiences. Hopefully the next time we are across the border, their new space is up and we will get to try that.

Would we recommend?

A definite yes! Coffee geeks would absolutely love this place. The owners are passionate about their art and have developed their own style of slow roasting that means the beans age nicely. Even if you are relatively new to coffee, this place will walk you through the many options they have and with an open mind, you'd get an opportunity to explore the modern styles of what a strong roaster can achieve.
