Restaurant Fiz Review - Our Second Visit

Restaurant Fiz

We had last visited Restaurant Fiz about 8 months ago and extremely happy to be visiting again this time round. If you are interested in reading about Restaurant Fiz and what their ethos is, our previous post is a good starting point.

For our second visit, I will drop the formalities and go straight into our dining experience. This time round, we went with ala carte again. From memory, the menu looked similar though the servers did share some updates to the menu and availability of specials.

We had 2 dishes from the Kudapan small bites section, 3 from the Hidang section which is meant to be shared and 2 desserts:

  • Kaya Toast with Century Egg Kaya, Foraged Parfait, Osetra Caviar

  • Epok Epok, Singapore Mushroom Rendang and Turmeric

  • Rack of Lamb with Yoghurt, Masala, Mint and Green Chillies

  • Blue Swimmer and Spanner Crab Gulai Lemak

  • Foraged Fiddlehead Ferns in Fragrant Oil

  • Nasi Dagang

As usual, the plating is absolutely gorgeous and the food came out at the same time, which meant we had a gorgeous view of all our dishes and were able to eat them like how we would for Malay food, all mixed up in the delicious nasi dagang.

There were plenty of dishes that stood out. All the mains were fantastic, lamb was beautifully charred with wonderful condiments. Chef Hafizzul Hashim dropped by a couple of times and suggested that we have the chilli that was served alongside the crab curry which I had already set aside on the plate. Have it together, he nudged and said it was not very spicy and would elevate the dish. I did. And let's just say I think Chef Hafizzul Hashim is right, if you are able to tolerate spices. We, unfortunately as not very spice tolerant asians, spent the next 5 minutes huffing and puffing from the spice. Regardless, it was a memorable experience, whichever way you take it.

Though the night, we also had fantastic chats with the somm who told us about his experiences previously and how it has been a learning journey for him working with Chef Hafizzul Hashim in terms of food and wine pairing. We lamented that asian flavours are obnoxiously difficult to pair and he immediately offered his advice and also shared his insights into his approaches in pairing.

Our sommelier recommended us 2 glasses for tonight:

Domaine des Tourelles VV Beka Valley from Lebanon 2020

Tornatore Etna Rosso Contrada Pietraizzo Sicily Italy 2020

These glasses turned out to be a very fantastic pairing for the spice and intensity of the grilled lamb. Very delightful indeed.

We ended the night with 2 desserts:

  • Signature Bahulu

  • Musang King Durian Souffle and Ice Cream

By the end of the meal, we were completely stuffed. However, we were brought the dessert menu which was very difficult to decline. Initially, we were just going to go with one durian souffle dessert. However, our very charming server told us the Bahulu was a signature not to be missed. He didn't need to try very hard as bahulu is something that we cannot ever decline. But when he said he was sure we would have an amazing time with these little morsels dipped in the durian souffle and even offered to pack them to go should we not be able to finish them, we didn't need more persuasion. Needless to say, we didn't have any to go because these little bites are just such a delight.

Booking

At the time of writing, there is still availability of tables a week out at the 6pm or 8.30 pm slot during the weekday. However, weekends look fully booked for now. Restaurant bookings are only open 21 days in advance, so do take note to book once there is availability.

Accessibility

Restaurant Fiz is at the top of the Tanjong Pagar Belt, walking distance from Maxwell MRT (approximately 150 m) which makes it extremely convenient.

The Damage

The full experience would set you back 228 ++ SGD. Alternatively, take your pick on the ala carte menu. Our 8 dishes and 2 wines set us back 415 SGD. Slightly cheaper than having the tasting menu and equally fulfilling.

Would we recommend?

Absolutely! Restaurant Fiz, in the last 8 months have definitely improved on their service. The team is well oiled and seemed genuinely happy to be serving and chatting. I love that the food this time is still consistently delightful and flavoursome. Like I mentioned before, Restaurant Fiz is filling a large gap in the fine dining space for our Muslim friends. They are not halal certified because they serve alcohol, but all their meats are halal sourced. It is a wonderful place for a wonderful meal and we would certainly be visiting again.
