Sarai Thai is an upscale thai dining venue located in Tanglin Mall that hits that sweetspot for a calm weeknight dinner, especially with AMEX Love Dining in your pocket. The venue is a spacious and upscale and the service team is excellent.
The kitchen is led by Chef Chimkit "Lisa" Khamphuang, an Issan-born chef with more than 27 years of experience cooking Thai food at this very address, dating back to its days as Patar Fine Thai. Sarai Thai is like a canvas for a more royal-leaning thai style food, which classic flavours and refined textures, clean sauces and house made curry pastes.
On our visit, we had:
Thai Spicy Creamy Tom Yum Lobster with Mushroom in Coconut Husk
Crispy Skin Duck Confit with Spicy Tamarind Sauce
Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab Stir Fried in Yellow Curry With Red Chili, Chinese Celery, Spring Onions and Egg
I particularly enjoyed the creamy tom yum soup. Served in a coconut husk, the soup layers on the lobster's natural sweetness against a spicy sour broth punched up with lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves and thai chillies, mellowed with coconut milk and earthy mushrooms. The heat builds gradually without ever being overwhelming.
The soft shell crab is golden and crunchy with a fragrant yellow curry sauce and the confit gets a thai twist with a crispy skin in a sweet, fruity sourness from the tamarind. These 2 mains were good but nothing exceptional. A very pleasant couple of dishes for our lunch visit.
Booking
We were able to visit with a same day reservation. The restaurant was not completely full on the Saturday that we visited, which made the experience calm and unhurried.
Accessibility
Located in Tanglin Mall which is a 5 min walk from Orchard Boulevard, Sarai Thai is easily accessible by public transport.
The Damage
We ordered 2 mains and a soup, together with water and rice to share and the total bill was 68 SGD (taxes included) after a 50 % discount was applied under the AMEX Love Dining Program.
Would We Recommend?
If you have access to the AMEX Love Dining program, Sarai Thai is definitely a keeper for a nice weekday meal. The venue is really nice and peaceful and the food is good. At full price however, it would demand more discernment against some of the other Singapore Thai establishments.
