You know a good pie shop when the shop is full of tradies at lunch time. That pie shop is Country Cob Bakery in Boronia. The Country Cob Bakery has a slew of awards, including Australia's Best Pie Maker in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023 and having a number of Bests. Best Seafood Pie, Best Gourmet Pie, Best Pepper Beef Pie and the lists just go on.
There are several Country Cob stores with the original being in Kyneton but we always drop by the Boronia store on route to Mount Dandenong or Yarra Valley. It is the perfect movie night or footy night dinner, especially when the drive is long and you don't feel like firing up the grill.
We have tried so many of their pies, it is very difficult to list them all out. However, these have been our favourites so far:
Pepper Beef Pie - a classic with tender beef chunks in a rich, peppery gravy
Cambodian Curry Chicken Pie - succulent chicken pieces in a fragrant Cambodian-style curry
Cambodian Fish Amok Pie - Australian barramundi in a mild, creamy coconut curry sauce in their signature special spices
Curry Scallop Pie - tender scallops in a mildly spiced curry sauce
There are several asian and Cambodian flavours on the menu and the reason is because Country Cob is run by 2 Cambodian brothers, Chan and Ryan Khun. They first opened their Kyneton shop in 2016 and has since expanded into several other locations. Their pies are flavourful, delicious and have super flaky crusts. Each pie is handmade and ensures a consistent quality everytime we have visited.
In addition to their pies, I have been told the vanilla slice is really good too although we have not yet gotten a chance to try it. We have to add it to our list next time!
Each pie is priced between 7-10 AUD. If you are looking to bring some of these pies home, either to eat at a later date or back to your home country, just let the team know and they will be able to pack it appropriately and also pack the unheated pies which will store better.

Yes! Once you have had Country Cob Bakery pies, you will be wondering why you don't have more of these in your freezer for that lazy night.
