Small Batch Coffee Roasters
3-9 Little Howard Street
North Melbourne, VIC 3051
Australia
In a city that has way too many cafes to count, I love one that has a clear story to tell. Small Batch Roasting is located in North Melbourne, in a back alley. It is a working roastery and has a small selection of pastries as well as outdoor seating. It is busy but everyone is relaxed. This place is truly a hidden gem, not yet swarming with tourists and a perfect place to get ethical coffee and a pastry before you head to get your weekly groceries at Queen Victoria Market just around the corner.

Small Batch Coffee selects their coffee and belong to this group of new age roasters who are pricing transparent. And that means that if you visit their website on any particular bean, you would be able to hear about their story and connections with a particular producer as well as their harvest process as well as green beans price. Small Batch Coffee even provides information about harvest dates and when it arrived in Melbourne. It is so fantastic to see this level of transparency. Many a times we get a shock when we see the prices of coffee beans increase dramatically year on year but as we see these transparency pricing, it helps us appreciate what goes into the whole process and the costs involved. It doesn't justify the high pricing that we have come to expect from coffee beans, but it helps us as consumers make informed decisions.

We brought home the Edilma Piedrahita and Halo Hartume for Espresso and Filter respectively. I enjoyed the Edilma Piedrahita alot and we were able to get plenty of strawberry balsamic notes that complimented the malt and butter flavours that were exactly the notes described.

Would We Recommend?
Yes! It is still a hidden gem, well known by the locals and focuses on outstanding beans and positive social impact. All their beans are from small roasters and roasting is done in small batches (if you haven't already noticed it from the name of their roasters). Visiting Small Batch Coffee Roasters is not just about getting a good cuppa, it is also about supporting a cause and creating a community and we absolutely love that.
