鉄板 お好み焼き 美月 or Teppan Okonomiyaki Mitsuki serves up Osaka's soul food - Okonomiyaki. Famous for its savory pancakes layered with cabbage, meat and plenty of sauces, Mitsuki draws loyal local fans and in the know tourists to both its original shop as well as its second shop in the Kuromon market location. Mitsuki's success comes from a collective passion for technique and flavour and also high quality ingredients.


We went with the premium Okonomiyaki which contains pork, udon, green onion and egg. There are options to add on, but we went with the classic.

The interiors of the restaurant is very Osaka - plenty of words on the wall, well worn wooden panels with the signature teppan grill anchoring the main dining room. For starters, we had the yam and beef tongue. The yam was so delicious, paired with a slightly spicy sauce and what we think is Chanja. The tongue was alright - we would pass the next time and order perhaps the Yakisoba, which also of people ordered and looked delicious.



How to eat your Okonomiyaki. If you are sitting at one of the counter seats, you can get your Okonomiyaki cooked by the kitchen staff. If you are sitting at the tables with its own grill, it is a cook your own approach. Making your own Okonomiyaki is plenty fun but if you are not comfortable doing so, remember to request for a counter seating!


The Okonomiyaki comes some what semi-precooked with all its contents already assembled and the staff will place this directly on the warm grill. Continue to let it cook on the hot plate in front of you and add a generous serve of okonomiyaki sauce, squiggle on the mayo, sprinkle with bonito flakes and aonori (seaweed powder). Okonomiyaki are not meant to be stirred and mix, so once ready, cut the Okonomiyaki into bitesize squares and eat away! Since the Okonomiyaki was already partially cooked, it only took 5 mins at the table for it to be ready.


Whilst a mountain of sauces looked extremely appetising, we went for the slow and steady sauce approach to make sure it doesnt get overly sweet and salty!

Booking

It looks possible to reserve at this restaurant. However, our recommendation is to do it the Osaka way - Get in early to line up for your table! During busy periods, it is not unusual to wait for an hour outside.


Accessibility

The main shop is located in the middle of Nagahoribashi staion and Kintetsu Nippombashi station and both are around 500 m apart. Very easily walkable and a very vibrant area.

Would We Recommend?

Yes! For a true Osaka experience, Teppan Okonomiyaki Mitsuki is a great place to get a good quality Okonomiyaki in the plethora of restaurants that is Japan's food kitchen. Personally, I feel that Okonomiyaki is one of those dishes that cannot go wrong, so it is very likely that you can get very good Okonomiyakis in many places in Osaka and not have to line up. However! It is still plenty fun at Teppan Okonomiyaki Mitsuki. We loved the whole vibe and experience of cooking your own Okonomiyaki and to cook it up the way you want it to be.
