361 Little Bourke St,

Melbourne VIC 3000,

Australia

Our favourite and recommended pasta restaurant in Melbourne is Tipo00. There is always a line and it is getting incredibly difficult to get a spot at this restaurant without pre-planning. But I have to say that the pasta is truly fantastic. The name"Tipo00" is also the finest milled type of flour available in Italy that is used in pasta making which makes a super smooth, elastic and silky dough for fresh egg pasta.

Established by chefs Andreas Papadakis, Alberto Fava, and restaurateur Luke Skidmore, Tipo00 is a place to gather, have fantastic food and is a pasta bar serving a good selection of wines to pair. Tipo00 now has 13 Chef Hats and puts it in the "Commended, Good Restaurant" in its category.

I have been visiting Tipo00 since they opened in 2014 and over the past 10 years, they have been incredibly consistent with their service, food and experience. I love that everytime we visit, they always ask if we would like to spilt our portions into sharing portions at the kitchen so we don't have to do it at the table. This is such a small but generous gesture of the team that we genuinely appreciate.

Signaure Tagliolini Al Nero
Signaure Tagliolini Al Nero

The staple on the menu is Tagliolini al nero, or squid ink tagliolini with squid and bottarga. It is refreshing, the pasta is al dente and and infused with a subtle brininess. Delicately tossed with tender, sauteed squid, it is deliciously balanced, textural and savoury. Apart from the staples, Tipo00 would often have their specials which is as delicious as their main menu. So do check in on their options!

Tipo00 makes their pasta in house. So you are guaranteed fresh pasta with every dish. In fact they even have a book called Tipo00, the pasta cookbook that you can purchase it at Amazon. My take is always once you have had freshly made pasta, it is very difficult to ever want to eat commercial pasta again. And Tipo00 does their pasta so well, it is very hard to just accept just any other pasta again.

Booking

Tipo00 is notoriously difficult to get a slot in within pre-planning. Reservations open at midnight and you can book 56 days ahead of your expected dining date. At the time of writing, there are still some weeknight slots available, however, all weekend tables are full for dinner, except for select bar tables at 9pm. I would highly recommend booking early and if possible, go to Tipo00 on a weekday!

Tipo00 do keep a few tables open for walk in guests but that is also quicky snapped up. We have been lucky a few times with lunch time slots by having very early lunch, but I would not count on this.

Accessibility

Located at the intersection of Little Bourke Street and Little Bourke Street, it is easily walkable or accessible within the free tram zone in the city.

The Damage

Each pasta dish is around 35-50 AUD and wines by the glass range between 15 and 35 AUD. Total Damage is dependent on how much you eat and drink but we find ourselves paying around 180 with 2 pastas, 2 glasses of wine and a starter and a dessert. The great thing about Australia is that no tips are required and what you see on the menu is what you pay, no additional taxes and service charge, which is something I definitely appreciate.

Would we recommend?

Yes! The OG of bringing a pasta bar concept to Melbourne with fresh pasta. We love the overall experience and vibe of this place, together with its consistent service and food. 10 years in and still filling up, is a wonderful testament to Tipo00. If you want fresh, high quality pasta in Melbourne, this is the place to go.
